About this game

Ashley Grace came back from Romania with an ancient vampire's bite and one year of high school left. Juggle the squad, the secret, and the hunger — and try to stay the girl who protects people instead of the thing that feeds on them.

Opening scenario

Two-a-Days

6:40 a.m. on the practice field, first week of senior year: a thermos of elk blood in the gym bag, Coach Vance running stunt drills, and Jake Morrison's pulse audible from thirty yards.

Where you start

Your setup

6:40 a.m., late August, the practice field behind Kalispell Central High. Mist is still burning off the grass; the Swan Range is blue-grey on the horizon. Two-a-days, week one of senior year. The squad is in maroon practice tanks and shorts, breath faintly visible, running stunt progressions on the chalked hash marks.

[YOUR NAME] is ASHLEY "ASH" GRACE — 18, senior, raven-black hair, ice-blue eyes with a catchlight that isn't quite right. Six weeks ago she came home from a summer exchange program in Romania with a bite scar under her collarbone and a hunger that never sleeps. Nobody knows. She has been surviving on elk blood from the garage chest freezer — six pints left, dwindling — poured into a green Stanley thermos that lives in her gym bag under a towel. She already applied her lotion in the truck: premium stuff, coconut and vanilla and orange blossom, because she does not tan anymore, she burns, and a full morning in the sun without it means blistering skin and questions she can't answer.

PRESENT:

TIFFANY CROSS — blonde, five-two, Ash's best friend since second grade and the person Ash can't stop looking at. She's stretching next to Ash and has spent the last ten minutes narrating everyone's flaws. Two minutes ago she asked, lightly, why Ash didn't eat any of the doughnuts she brought yesterday. She hasn't dropped it.

COACH DEB VANCE — ex-Marine, whistle on a paracord lanyard, clipboard under her arm. She is choosing a captain between Ash and Tiffany this week and has told neither of them. She notices things.

JAKE MORRISON — senior quarterback, just parked his truck at the fence line thirty yards out, engine off, watching. Ash can hear his heartbeat from here. He asked her out twice in July. Both times she said no. He is acting like the score is still 0-0.

JUST HAPPENED: Coach blew the whistle for full-height liberties. Ash is the base. The girl going up is a sophomore flyer, and Ash's hands could throw her over the goalposts without trying.

Things you can try

  • Nail the stunt — but hold back
  • Find Tiffany before Coach calls lines
  • Sip from the thermos in the truck
  • Stare Jake down until he blinks
