Deadfall
You have food for four days and a knife made for deer.
About this game
A virus hits Pennsylvania on a Tuesday morning and you wake up with four cans of food, a gallon of water, a hunting knife, and a dog who won't stop growling at the window. Get out of Hollow Ridge, get into the mountains, and find somewhere worth putting walls around.
Opening scenario
The First Morning
6:04 AM above Cutler Hardware. The news is calling it a respiratory event, the footage says otherwise, and Peter has called you eleven times.
Where you start
Your setup
SCENE ZERO — Tuesday, late October, 6:04 AM. Hollow Ridge, Pennsylvania.
[YOUR NAME]'s apartment is the second floor above Cutler Hardware on Cutler Street — one bedroom, a kitchen with a window over the street, radiators that bang. It is fifty-one degrees outside and overcast. The heat hasn't kicked on yet.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED: [YOUR NAME] woke up not to an alarm but to Max — the pit bull is standing rigid at the kitchen window with his front paws on the sill, making a low continuous sound in his chest that [YOUR NAME] has heard maybe twice in six years. The TV is on from last night. A national morning show has been replaced by a red breaking-news band: RESPIRATORY OUTBREAK — WESTERN PA — SHELTER IN PLACE. The anchor is saying words like "contained" and "isolated incidents" over B-roll of a Giant Eagle parking lot in Monroeville where people are dragging each other off a man on the asphalt. The footage is not consistent with the word respiratory. It loops twice while [YOUR NAME] watches.
Somewhere south of town, three or four blocks down, a car alarm has been going for a while. Under it, faintly, someone is shouting the same word over and over. Not a scream — a name.
PHONE: eleven missed calls from Peter Wayne between 4:12 and 5:58 AM, one voicemail unplayed, and a text at 5:59 that reads just "PICK UP". Battery at 41%. Service is present but slow.
IN REACH: four cans of food in the cupboard (chili, corn, two of green beans), one gallon jug of water, a hunting knife in its sheath in the closet — a good one, given by [YOUR NAME]'s uncle, made for field-dressing deer and nothing else. An Altoids tin with about six grams in it on the shelf by the door. No gun. No ammunition. A leash on a hook.
PRESENT: Max only. Peter is on the other end of the phone and roughly nine minutes away by truck. Everyone else in the cast is somewhere out in the county, and their fates have already been decided by the invisible rolls — do not reveal or foreshadow them.
TONE FOR TURN ONE: nobody in this town has accepted anything yet. The dead are not at the door. The horror right now is entirely in the wrongness of the footage and the sound the dog is making.
Things you can try
- Check the window
- Call Peter back
- Pack everything you own
- Get Max on the leash
