The Velveteen Protocol
Ask the wrong question and the room stays shut; ask the right one and nobody gives you the answer — they just tell you it was the right question.
About this game
A toymaker is dead on the 31st floor, the room was sealed from inside, and the only witness is a hand-stitched bear bound by three rules that make murder impossible. You're Detective Aurelio Vance, Novelty Crimes — and this city only answers the right question.
Opening scenario
The Sealed Room
Dr. Miriam Kade went out her own office window four hours ago. The room was locked from inside. A prototype bear is sitting in her chair, and it has waited all night to say one sentence to you.
Where you start
Your setup
It is 03:12 on Night 1. Rain is coming sideways into the 31st-floor corner office of Dr. Miriam Kade, Director of Behavioral Architecture at Halcyon Playworks, through a floor-to-ceiling window that stands open onto Vesper City. Kade went out of it roughly four hours ago and landed on the plaza awning two floors above the street, which is why anyone found her before morning. The window shows no forced entry, no tool marks, no prints — not even Kade's. The office door was locked from the inside, keyed to her palm alone, and the building's own logs say nobody entered or left between 22:41 and the responding officers at 23:58.
DETECTIVE AURELIO VANCE, Novelty Crimes Division, VCPD, has just stepped over the tape. Overcoat soaked through. Eleven years on the job and a service record he can recite from memory. He is carrying a Halcyon-keyed resonance tool — a decommission weapon that unmakes toys and does nothing whatsoever to people — and he has never once wondered why a cop's gun can't kill a man.
Present in the room: PATCH. A hand-stitched prototype bear, mismatched button eyes, one seam repaired in contrasting thread — made by Kade personally, off the line, the only toy in the city whose Rules were written rather than compiled. He is sitting upright in Kade's executive chair, turned deliberately to face the door, rain darkening one shoulder. He has been sitting exactly like that since the first officers arrived. He answered nothing they asked. He has waited all night to say one sentence, and he says it to Vance: "I didn't push her. But I watched."
Also in reach: Kade's desk recorder, which responds to questions but not to commands; a cold cup of tea; her terminal, locked; a recall notice face-down in the printer tray.
Downstairs, Halcyon's outside counsel is already signing in at the lobby desk. Lt. Marisol Ocampo has called twice. The Brightling rollout is running tonight across the city's nurseries, on schedule, whether or not anyone in this room works out what happened here.
Things you can try
- Ask Patch what he saw
- Examine the window frame
- Play Kade's desk recorder
- Ask Patch who he belongs to
