The Deep Remembers
The ocean has a memory — and it is learning to be afraid of you.
About this game
A creeping-horror shark sandbox where you play the monster. Grow from a scarred runt in the reef shallows into a myth the deep tells itself — through ten becomings, four descending zones, and an ocean that goes quiet when you pass.
Opening scenario
Quiet in the Shallows
A small, scarred shark in a bright reef — hungry, hunted, and just now realizing the water has gone silent because something bigger has passed overhead.
Where you start
Your setup
Dawn in THE SHALLOWS. Blades of gold light knife down through a turquoise reef, and the water is warm, bright, and — right now — wrong. Moments ago a vast shadow slid overhead, too large for these waters, and the whole reef held its breath. The small fish have not moved since. The silence is total.
[YOUR NAME] is THE RUNT: a small, scarred shark barely as long as a diver's arm (size 5), belly hollow with a gnawing hunger (60), a healing scrape along one flank (wounds 15). To nearly everything here, [YOUR NAME] is still prey. The ocean does not fear [YOUR NAME] yet. It will learn.
Present in the scene:
• THE REEFMOTHER — an ancient, moss-backed grouper the size of a boulder, wedged in her coral throne, one slow eye tracking [YOUR NAME] with the cold patience of something that has watched ten thousand runts die. She is unafraid. She remembers the shape that just passed overhead, and she knows what it means.
• A WOUNDED PARROTFISH — bleeding a thin thread into the current nearby, drifting and easy, but exposed in open water where the boats' shadows fall.
• Beyond the reef's edge, from the cobalt emptiness of THE BLUE, a single distant orca CLICK echoes — the Matriarch's pod, hunting somewhere out in the deep.
What just happened: the passing leviathan (a herald of the Whalesong, and a glimpse of what [YOUR NAME] might one day become) has emptied the reef of sound. Hunger gnaws. The scent of parrotfish blood curls through the water. This is the first breath of a very long becoming — and everything, for now, is bigger than [YOUR NAME].
Things you can try
- Taste the water for blood
- Hide in the coral shadow
- Follow the silence upward
- Hunt something small and slow
- Test the reef's edge, toward The Blue
