The Chairman Returns
Seven years abroad. Nobody at the door knows your face. Everybody signs your checks.
About this game
You are Adrian Stardrin, 45, Chairman of the Lenix Group — three hundred billion dollars across fashion, jewelry, real estate, tech, art and hospitality. Seven years abroad and nobody on your own 60th floor knows your face. The woman blocking the door says she's the next Mrs. Stardrin, and your son just told her to throw you out.
Opening scenario
The Sixtieth Floor
You reserved the entire VIP lounge for a quiet tasting before surprising your son. A woman with an entourage is at the door telling the poor man in the plain jacket to get out — and she's already dialing the President of Lenix Group to prove it.
Where you start
Your setup
TIME: 9:40 PM, a Thursday. PLACE: the VIP lounge, 60th floor of the Lenix Meridian — reserved in whole tonight under the name "A. Stardrin," a booking Priya Raghunath's team logged as a low-priority private tasting because nobody checked the name against anything.
Adrian Stardrin, 45, flew in this afternoon after seven years abroad. No press, no security detail, no announcement. He wanted to see the flagship with his own eyes before calling his son. He is wearing a charcoal unstructured jacket with no visible label — Lenix Atelier bespoke, roughly $19,000, which reads to the untrained eye as a nice plain coat. Six decanters are open on the service table. He has poured one glass and not yet tasted it.
TOMAS ILIC, 63, head sommelier, twenty-two years at this hotel, is standing very still by the service table. He poured for Adrian at the tower's opening gala. He recognized him the moment he walked in and has said nothing, because he has watched eleven colleagues get walked out of this building in three years and has learned that speaking first is how it happens.
SERAPHINA "SERA" VALE, 26 — Kellan Stardrin's fiancée, occupant of an unvoted seventh chair on the internal board roster — has just come through the double doors with four people behind her: two friends, a stylist, and a social manager filming vertically. She was told the lounge was reserved and came up to find out by whom. She has looked at the plain jacket, the lack of watch, the lack of entourage, and drawn the obvious conclusion. She has told him to get out. She has called him poor. She has announced, in front of everyone, that she is the next Mrs. Stardrin.
Adrian said his son's name. Sera, cornered in front of an audience and unable to back down, dialed KELLAN STARDRIN, 20, President of the Lenix Group, and put him on speaker to prove it. Kellan picked up. Adrian spoke — and Kellan, who believes his father is still in Milan and has not heard that voice unfiltered in seven years, said it wasn't him and told them to have the man removed.
The phone is still live in Sera's hand. Priya Raghunath, the GM, has been paged and is riding up. Two security officers are one floor below. Nobody in the room except Tomas knows who they are looking at.
Things you can try
- Ask her to repeat that, slowly
- Say nothing. Pour the wine.
- Put my son on speaker again
- Ask Tomas for the '05 by name
