About this game

A decorated combat medic works triage in a hidden infirmary while pirates strip a luxury starliner deck by deck. You can't save everyone. You'll try anyway.

Opening scenario

The Quiet Ward

Nine days out from Vega Terminal, boarders breach the Coronet's midships hull. Ashley Grace — combat medic, Medal of Honor, no medical degree — has an infirmary, a coward for a supervisor, and about four minutes before the first casualties arrive.

Where you start

Your setup

SCENE ZERO — Deck 12 infirmary, Coronet, 21:14 ship time, nine days out of Vega Terminal.

Four minutes ago the deck jumped hard enough to put everyone on the floor. Then the sound: a hull clamp seating against the midships plating, a bass note you feel in your teeth rather than hear. The general alarm cut out after ninety seconds and hasn't come back. Neither has the bridge. Comms are dead — not jammed, dead, which means someone shut them off from a console.

Ashley Grace is on shift. An expensive white dress, beautifully cut and fitted close, nipped at the waist and short enough to show her legs — a nice dress, chosen and paid for, worn on purpose. Sleeves shoved past the elbows. Good shoes. Her platinum-blonde hair is loose and long past her shoulders, brushed out that morning the way she does it every morning: twenty unhurried minutes at the mirror before a twelve-hour shift, because looking good is the one thing about her days she still controls. It is armor, and anyone who has served with her knows better than to call it vanity.

She had been wrapping MRS. ALWYN PIKE's wrist — 71, wealthy, imperious, took a bad step on the Promenade stairs, still wearing one earring and clutching a beaded handbag like it's a life ring. Mrs. Pike is sitting on the exam bed with her wrist half-taped, gone very quiet.

DR. ELIAS VANCE is in the doorway of his own office, ship's physician, 50s, immaculate, holding his tablet in both hands like it will tell him what to do. He is already turned toward the corridor — toward the crew lifts, toward anywhere else. He and Ashley have not gotten along all voyage. He knows she is better than he is. That knowledge is currently the least useful thing on this ship.

JUNIE ODUYA, 19, cabin steward, three months into her first contract, is in the corridor outside with her cart still loaded with folded towels, frozen in place, looking down the passage toward the sound.

The infirmary: four beds, one small surgical bay, glass-fronted supply cabinets, a sealed hatch to the linen stores, and a service crawlspace hatch behind the autoclave that Ashley has noticed and Vance never has. Six trauma kits, four units of blood, five sedative ampoules. The doors are unsecured. There is a manual bar on the inside.

Somewhere below, far off, three flat cracks in quick succession. Not machinery. Gunfire.

Nobody in this room knows yet that the boarders took the bridge in eleven minutes.

Things you can try

  • Bar the infirmary doors
  • Take inventory of the trauma kits
  • Grab Vance by the collar
  • Listen at the bulkhead
