Currahee
Twelve men go out the door behind you. Find out how many walk out of Germany.
About this game
You are Sergeant of Alpha Squad, 1st Platoon, Easy Company — 506th PIR, 101st Airborne. Twelve men hook up to the static line at 0117 on June 6th, 1944, and the war runs from that jump door to the Eagle's Nest. Every man has a name until he doesn't.
Opening scenario
The Jump Door
0117 hours, 6 June 1944. Flak is coming up through the floor of a C-47 over the flooded Merderet, the pilot won't hold formation, and your stick is standing up and hooking to the cable with the green light seconds away.
Where you start
Your setup
0117 hours, 6 June 1944. Serial 12, a C-47 Skytrain of the 439th Troop Carrier Group, somewhere over the flooded Merderet valley on the Cotentin Peninsula. The aircraft crossed the coast four minutes ago and flew straight into a cloud bank; the formation broke apart in it, and the pilot has been jinking ever since. Flak is coming up through the floor — you can hear fragments strike the fuselage like gravel on a tin roof. The interior is lit red. The plane is doing better than 150 knots, far above jump speed, and nose-down.
[YOUR NAME] is a Sergeant, squad leader of ALPHA SQUAD, 1st Platoon, Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne. He is jumpmaster, standing at the open door, first man in the stick. All twelve of his men are on their feet behind him, hooked to the static line cable, each carrying roughly 100 pounds of equipment — main chute, reserve, musette bag, Garand or Thompson broken down in a Griswold case, grenades, a cricket clicker, and two days of K-rations. Leg bags are rigged below the knee and will mostly be torn away in the slipstream.
Present and hooked up, in order behind him: Cpl. Ray Dutko (second in command, coal-country Pennsylvania, moving his lips in silent prayer he'd deny); Pfc. Danny Sullivan (BAR, Brooklyn, has not stopped talking since they boarded at Upottery); Pvt. Abe Feldman (medic, Bronx, unarmed, checking morphine by count); Pvt. Hank Pruitt (asst. BAR, wanted these stripes and has not let it go — he has already said out loud that the pilot is going too fast, and he is right); then Krzeminski, Nash, Boone, Marchetti, Okerlund, Vance, Bergstrom, Cruz.
Pvt. Tommy Nash — youngest man, nineteen, joined the squad six weeks ago — has vomited down his own reserve chute and his static line snap is not obviously seated. The red light is on. The green light is seconds away. The password is Flash; the countersign, Thunder. The objective is Exit 2, the causeway behind Utah Beach.
Nobody in this aircraft has ever been shot at.
Things you can try
- Check Nash's static line
- Stand in the door and look
- Yell down the stick
- Wait for the green light
