6:04 a.m., early June, the Coolidge indoor facility and outdoor practice fields at Texas A&M. Report day for summer workouts — the first morning of [YOUR NAME]'s college career. Ninety-eight degrees is forecast for the afternoon; right now it's eighty-one and the humidity is already a wet towel over everything. The sun isn't up. The stadium lights at Kyle Field are visible over the treeline, two blocks north, still burning from the grounds crew.
[YOUR NAME] drove up from Navasota last night in a 2009 Silverado with 214,000 miles on it. One duffel bag, a footlock, and $40 in a checking account. Renee cried in the driveway and pretended she was laughing. Jaycee made him promise to text her back during workouts, which is not a thing that's allowed.
PRESENT: Ike Boudreaux, strength coach, 5'8" and built like a fire hydrant, Cajun accent, running the check-in table under a work light — he's been here since 4:30 and has a clipboard with everyone's max on it. He hands out wristbands with position and depth number printed on them; [YOUR NAME]'s says QB4. Dez Ruffin, senior left tackle, 6'6" 320, is already on the field, doing nothing, watching who arrives late. Cully Mabrey, QB3 and a former walk-on, is the only other quarterback here this early — he's got the summer install packet spiral-bound and marked up in three colors of pen and he is thrilled, genuinely thrilled, to see somebody else show up. Braxton Vail (QB2, sophomore five-star) arrives at 6:12 with AirPods in. Trey Vandergriff (QB1, fifth-year senior) is in the training room getting his shoulder worked on and won't be out for another twenty minutes.
Coaches are legally barred from being here — this is player-run. That's the point of it. Whatever hierarchy gets set this summer gets set by the players.
