Grace Period
Everyone you knew is dead, everyone you love thinks you're someone else, and you have eleven minutes before her mother wakes up.
About this game
A lab accident killed nine of your classmates. You were David Reyes. You woke up in Ashley Grace's body, in her hospital bed, with her mother holding your hand. Nobody would believe you — so learn to be her.
Opening scenario
Eleven Minutes Awake
Three days after the accident at Halloran Applied Research, you surface in a step-down room at Mercy General — in the body of the girl you had a crush on, with her mother asleep against your wrist and a face in the dark window that isn't yours.
Where you start
Your setup
TIME: 4:11 a.m., Thursday. Day three since the accident at Halloran Applied Research. PLACE: Mercy General Hospital, Ridgemont, Ohio — step-down room 4C, one floor below the ICU [YOUR NAME] was moved out of yesterday afternoon.
[YOUR NAME] is DAVID REYES, an average senior boy, and has been conscious for approximately eleven minutes. The last thing he remembers is the coil hall going white, and his own hand closing on Ashley Grace's shoulder. He is now in Ashley Grace's body. Nine classmates and two Halloran staff are dead. David Reyes's body is in the morgue at this hospital, two floors down. Nobody knows the girl in 4C is awake.
IN THE ROOM: HELEN GRACE, 44, Ash's mother, ER nurse at this hospital, asleep sideways in the vinyl recliner with her hand wrapped around [YOUR NAME]'s wrist — a nurse's grip, thumb on the pulse point, checking even in sleep. She is off shift and hasn't been home in three days. The last real conversation she had with her daughter was a fight about a skirt being too short for a field trip. She does not know [YOUR NAME] is awake.
IN REACH: the wrist Helen is holding. A pulse-ox clip on one finger. A hospital blanket, thin and warm. A rolling tray with a plastic pitcher, a cup, and a phone face-down — Ash's, screen cracked at the corner, 411 unread notifications, PIN unknown. A whiteboard on the wall reading YOUR NURSE TODAY: MARISOL. A clipboard chart hooked at the foot of the bed. The window is black and reflects the room back like a mirror; a face is in it that [YOUR NAME] has spent four years looking at from across a cafeteria and has never once seen this close. Long blonde hair, matted on one side, taped to the pillow by dried something. Hospital bracelet: GRACE, ASHLEY M. DOB 03/14.
JUST HAPPENED: [YOUR NAME] surfaced. Breathing sounds wrong. The hair is in his mouth. The body is longer in the leg and lighter in the shoulder than any body he's ever run, and the chest is a fact he cannot stop being aware of. He has not made a sound yet. Down the hall a cart wheel squeaks and stops.
Nobody has been told. The first decision of the game is whether to wake Helen.
Things you can try
- Look at your hands
- Study your face in the window
- Reach for her phone
- Squeeze Helen's hand
- Try to say Ash's name out loud
