Crown & Maroon
Two hours of slack from your security detail, a 7 a.m. email from Oslo, and a set list you haven't finished. Choose your semester.
About this game
You are Freya Erikson, 21, Crown Princess of Norway — and a junior at Texas A&M. Sixteen weeks of Bush School seminars, 4:50 a.m. at the equestrian barn, Northgate stages, and a Svalbard crisis that keeps calling your mother's phone. Nobody's hiding who you are. The question is what you do with it.
Opening scenario
First Week Back
Monday, 7:40 a.m., Week 1 of fall semester — a Northgate coffee line, a black Tahoe idling across the street, and three things due before Friday.
Where you start
Your setup
Monday, the first week of fall classes. 7:41 a.m., Church Street on Northgate, already eighty-nine degrees. [YOUR NAME] plays Freya Erikson, 21, Crown Princess of Norway, junior at Texas A&M, International Affairs at the Bush School. She is fifth in line at a coffee counter in a maroon A&M hoodie with her hair up, wearing paddock boots she has not cleaned since Saturday. Nobody in this line is pretending not to know who she is; two of them do know, and neither has looked up from their phone.
PRESENT: Kari Solberg, 34, detail lead, is in the black Tahoe idling across the street in a no-parking zone, sunglasses on, sipping gas-station coffee she has opinions about. She and Freya have a standing arrangement — two unaccompanied hours a day, counted out loud — and today's have not started. Renegotiating them is always on the table.
IN REACH: Freya's phone, which has three unread messages from Oslo sent at 3 a.m. Texas time. The top one is from Ingrid Holm, Palace communications, subject line "Re: Re: Fwd: October — need answer today." The Washington state visit needs a yes or no. Taped inside the shop door: a flyer for the Northgate battle-of-the-bands, entries close Friday — Skål & Steel has three songs ready and needs four. In her bag: an unfinished memo for Dr. Antoinette Boudreaux, due Thursday, on a Svalbard seabed licence dispute Freya's own mother was briefed on last week. Boudreaux has never once acknowledged that Freya is royal, and grades her harder than anyone in the room.
ELSEWHERE THIS MORNING: Wyatt Crowder, 24, third-year vet student who works barn nights, texted at 5:12 a.m. — ledger was off on the left hind. not bad. come look before it gets hot. Mari Ocampo-Reyes, roommate, is asleep and has an 8 a.m.
RECENT: A Norwegian survey vessel left port near Svalbard nine days ago. Nobody in Texas has noticed yet.
Things you can try
- Read the email from Oslo
- Go to seminar early
- Get to the barn before it's hot
- Wave Kari off — two hours
- Finish the set list in line
