Reddit without getting banned

Reddit

Reddit converts extremely well for text-based games because the audience already reads for fun. It is also the easiest place to get banned if you lead with a link. The rule that keeps you safe: post the story, not the product. This guide is the safety half; Reddit posts that keep earning is the strategy half. Read both.

The approach

Share your session as content. A post titled "The AI running my heist game just double-crossed me and I need to talk about it" with screenshots of the actual exchange is a story people want to read. The game is context, not the pitch.

  • Write the post like you would tell a friend. Beginning, twist, how it ended.
  • Screenshots beat links. Crop them clean, keep the best lines visible.
  • Name the game only when asked, or once, casually, in the body. Never in the title.
  • Put your referral link in your Reddit profile bio. When someone asks "where do I play this," answer in the comments and mention the link is in your profile. A direct link in a comment is fine in most subreddits when someone explicitly asked.

Where to post

  • Subreddits about AI storytelling, interactive fiction, text adventures, and solo roleplay are the natural home.
  • Big general subreddits work when the story is genuinely strong, but read each subreddit's self-promotion rules first. They differ wildly and moderators do not warn twice.
  • Follow the common 10:1 guideline everywhere: at least ten genuine contributions (comments, unrelated posts) for every one post that touches your own content.

What gets you banned

  • Link drops with no story. Fastest report button on the internet.
  • The same post across five subreddits in one hour. Cross-posting is visible on your profile.
  • Arguing with moderators. Take the removal, read the rules, adjust.
  • New account, first post is promotional. Age the account with real participation first.

The long game

One well-received story post produces comments asking what the game is, and those commenters convert at a far higher rate than any ad because they asked. Two good posts a week beats a daily spray. Track which subreddits actually send signups through your dashboard and double down there.

Caption starting points live in your materials library; rewrite them into your own voice before posting, Reddit smells templates.
